All Verbinnen’s bare root is produced by starting the seedlings in a plug which in turn is transplanted to the field. All our transplant beds are prepared and then covered with a plastic cover (termed as plastic mulch) to reduce weed competition and maintain soil moisture.
Ever since we started using this system we have noticed an increase in the amount of fibrous roots on our seedlings. With an increase of fibrous roots, our seedlings re-establish quickly in their new site and they have a high survival rate.
The other benefit of using our transplant system is that the majority of our shrub species are actually in a shrub form. This is a result of sowing multiple seeds in a plug and the seedlings having enough space to establish branching. We often refer to our shrubs as a landscape ready bare root or we sometimes say they are like a container grown plant that was bare rooted.
